Sam paints the way he see’s the world, with genius, humor, uncommon perception, in vivid, unconventional colors, and frenetic brush strokes. Sam’s works are stories that he’ll tell, arms waving, with a firehose of rapid-fire eloquence and rare empathy, punctuated with F bombs. His paintings take you on a wild ride; you’ll only crave more when the world stops spinning,

From Sam’s perspective:

I intend to explore the edges of chaos. Calculated risks are not risks. I take real risks. What and how I paint informs how I live and love. Everything has to be included. To love, to create, to notice, to share, are all kinds of celebrations. Some are solemn as ritual, some are blown explosives.

Biography

Sam’s Long Island mother towed her four kids to every free museum in the Deep South. These Navy brats had to negotiate life viscerally. Sam clung to images of energetic textured brushstrokes. This initiated his persistent requests for a set of tubed acrylics and lessons so that by age 10 he had both, with the mentor of the gentle Gene Barber, a revered North Florida painter honoring the piney woods local rural tradition. Early teen years of Wednesday afternoons with Gene gifted Sam with the courage and confidence evident in his work.

The crooked paths of the curious and angst-ridden led Sam through a motley array of life-long influences: family farming, primitive camping, long-distance running, competitive rowing, a commission in the US Navy SEALs….. and endless travels, with Bohemian years on untethered motorcycles, hand-painting billboards, tattooing, framing timber homes, a jail sentence in a county road camp, a decade teaching public school, leading youth boat building and outdoor education/therapy programs, and now meeting the oceans as an international merchant mariner. Sam is currently a tugboat Captain assigned in Alaska.

These crooked paths guide Sam into multi-faceted spectrums of memories and awakenings that fully flavor his artistic fervor.

Sam and his partner, Erin, left San Diego in 2004 to make Asheville their home. They have raised 2 dauntless kids, who are each powerfully creative. Every day, Erin deeply enhances Sam’s wide range of sensitivities.

Sam paints the stuff that keeps him in love with life. He wants you to also fall in love with the audacity of noticing, with the joys of all sorts of passions. His subjects are what he wants more of, what he finds worth looking at, and that teach him what seeing actually is.
